Truth-Driven Thinking

"Skepticism 101" is the best description of Stephen L. Gibson's real-time journey of inquiry, as seen through the eyes of a real, everyday, emotion-driven human from middle America. Steve is on a quest of discovery using a brand of critical thinking that he calls Truth-Driven Thinking. It's his personal quest to find ever-elusive "truth", amidst the emotion-driven thinking, hype, and information overload of today's world. This program has led Stephen to amazing places, and even a well-reviewed novel called "A Secret of the Universe," which somewhat chronicled his sometimes painful discoveries that many of his own beliefs don't fit with the evidence. Guests who've helped him on the way include: Michael Shermer on science and evolution; Bishop John Shelby Spong on the "Sins of Scripture"; Tom Harpur on the historicity of Jesus; Paul Campos on "The Obesity Myth"; Dr. Robert Price on New Testament truth; Joe Nickell and James Randi on paranormal investigations; Dr. David Pimentel on ethanol; and Dr. Jerry Hoffman on evidence-based medicine. Science, reason, and skepticism are the tools to be used, but without ignoring both the humor and the fascinating reality of our human, emotional experience. It's a quest for intellectual honesty and free inquiry: part instructions for skeptic wannabes, part "learning by way of open dialogue", part audioblog of real-time personal discovery. No sacred cows, Steve critically examines everything from paranormal beliefs, "drunk driving" statistics, circumcision, miracle health cures, health and obesity, prostitution, drugs, religion, philosophy, atheism, Christianity, conspiracy theories, psychology, urban legends, paradigms and heuristics, epistemology and much more. Truth-Driven Thinking is a way of asking questions--a mode of inquiry that emphasizes science, reason, and evidence-based thinking, as opposed to emotion-driven thinking ... but it is much more than that. It is an alternative way to view and celebrate the real world in which we live, beyond simple or divisive religious dogma, beyond self-help, and beyond the empty promises of pseudoscientific and new-age babble. There is great beauty and peace that can be experienced by embracing reality, and even by embracing the the fullness of our humanity: pain, anguish, joy, wonder, awe, fragility, and love.

(Part 2) How does a true believer come to atheism? Understand Stephen's path, backed by archived exchanges with two former pastors and one retired Episcopal bishop, as well as an evolutionary biologist--all in order to share with Christian believers exactly how and why some people stop believing. Wouldn't believers want to fully understand that process? Perhaps save others from it? Of course Steve's goal is not that, but rather is mutual understanding--as the first step toward tolerant, peaceful, and respectful interactions. He understands the world of believers; have you tried to genuinely understand his story? As you will find out, it wasn't a willful or conscious choice. (Excerpts with Bishop John Shelby Spong, scholars and former pastors Dr. Robert M. Price and Tom Harpur, and biologist Dr. David Sloan Wilson.)

This is Stephen's sermon/rant against needs for more external motivation in our lives. If we are honest about it, we must admit that when our achievement-obsessed society conventionally talks about "motivation," we are talking about pursuit of greater material wealth, status, recognition, and achievement that is heavily based upon the external assessments of others--not our intrinsic sense of wellbeing. He shares thoughts about why furthering the hype of self-help and motivation is misguided, ineffective, and even destructive--at least in the way that our culture promotes, hypes, harps on, and defines success so heavily in material terms, and in terms of achievement (which is usually measured material terms). 20 min 49 sec.

With surprising candor and conclusions, educators on the front lines--from differing backgrounds and political leanings-- discuss whether a crisis exists in public education, and if so of what is its origin: fiscal, social, political, institutional, or other. How would these professional administrators and teachers go about fixing things from their view in the trenches? What do they think about No Child Left Behind; increased college expectation; international test comparisons; current financial pinches; standardized testing; overpaid teachers; social & sociological determinants of success; rankings; merit pay for teachers; tenure; unions? Ron Fuller is county superintendent for Kalamazoo RESA in Michigan; Matt Miller is superintendent in Parchment, Michigan--the district where Tom Novak teaches 6th grade, and is a past president for his local union. Stephen just retired after 10 years as a local school board trustee and president. Feedback to sgibson@truthdriventhinking.com. (1h:20min)

Just how much of current "orthodox" medicine is based upon solid research? The answer may surprise you. Dr. Jerry Hoffman joins us to discuss how many conventional medical practices and standards of care are NOT evidence-based, why that is, and also the limitations that the real world imposes upon the ideal of evidence-driven action. Dr. Hoffman (UCLA Medical Center and publisher of "Emergency Medical Abstracts") provides valuable insights from his years of abstracting medical journals for other physicians, insights that transcend medicine and apply to many aspects of the real world.
TDT#77: The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power--with author and religion reporter Jeff Sharlet

Back in the national spotlight, religion reporter Jeff Sharlet joins Stephen Gibson to discuss his book about the secretive influence of a religious "elect" that has wielded power and influence in Washington D.C. since the 1930s. The book, "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power," is not conspiratorial in nature, but the newly discovered connections to Sen. John Ensign and S.C. governor Mark Sanford are nothing compared to the larger, elitist religious views Sharlet says are at the core of this controversial and powerful group.

Coming out on Religion - Why we must go there.

Why can't I ignore this sensitive topic? Oh how I wish I could never discuss religious beliefs again. Believe me. But alas, they so profoundly shape people's actions in the world (think "suicide bombers"), that ignoring discussions of why we believe what we believe with regard to religion, seems an abdication of the integrity and authenticity of any search for truth. Includes a personal sharing of my explicit statement on religion that was made to friends and family some months ago. Also includes a summary of reactions elicited.
Dr. David Sloan Wilson--Why Dawkins is wrong about religion

Among other books, Dr. David Sloan Wilson is the author of Evolution for Everyone: How Darwin's Theory Can Change the Way We Think About Our Lives, and today he joins Steve to discuss not only evolution, but his criticisms of today's popular voices of atheism, such as Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and Hitchens. Dr. Wilson says there is empirical evidence that religion has played useful roles in the evolution of humans, and that we are not being scientific when we leap to imply it is the root of all evil or a useless byproduct of other adaptations. See and review his papers at

Paul Campos talks about his controversial book, The Obesity Myth. Among other statements that are gaining credibility in the field of medicine, Mr. Campos alleges that not only is there no causal link between being overweight and suffering disease, but that there isn't really even a correlation (except at the more extreme ends of obesity).
Joe Nickell - Paranormal Investigator

From the Shroud of Turin, to countless haunted dwellings, to crop circles and lake monsters, Joe Nickell has the real-life job of investigating mysteries. He is the Senior Research Fellow for the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP = http://www.csicop.org), and is an accomplished magician-turned expert detective, a forensic document analyst, English professor and author of 20 books including his most recent books "The Mystery Chronicles: More Real-Life X-Files", and "Secrets of the Sideshows". Joe's intellectually honest approach to mysteries, sightings and investigations has made him a common media resource, and in fact Joe is hot off a big profile story by NBC New's Today Show. Next week is Paul Campos, author of "The Obesity Myth".
http://www.truthdriventhinking.com for more info.
Voice feedback to 888-247-2103 or sgibson@truthdriventhinking.com

Detroit Christian radio--Stephen on Bob Dutko's WMUZ show (Epilogue #16)

Steve appeared on Christian powerhouse WMUZ a while back, with Bob Dutko. We haven't podcasted the interview before, probably because Steve hates his performance. With wires crossed between producers and Tim, Steve was told by producers/Tim it would be a discussion about inter-belief tolerance and how we often don't welcome others to hold views other than ours--especially about religion. Alas, Steve would do it quite differently today, but hear for yourself how he responded.

Questions about Ethanol - Dr. David Pimentel

Dr. David Pimentel is a professor of ecology and agricultural sciences at Cornell University. His research (with Tad Patzek) indicates that ethanol consumes more energy to produce, than can be gained from it's use - a 30% energy loss. Do you think our lawmakers have reviewed the science on both sides of this story before investing $3 billion annually? There seems little dialogue, and near unanimous euphoria over ethanol these days. I don't know that they are, but what if Dr. Pimentel's figures are right? If nothing else, you'll at least have a side of the story and the data that few others appear to have heard.

What can parents to do raise kids who can think critically and independently? How should we deal with that former flower-child teacher who is teaching woo-woo wackiness in the classroom? How can we prepare our kids to make good decisions about sex, drugs, cults, etc.? We certainly do not have all the answers, but Tim Bennett and I explore the issue in this week's episode.

Don't forget, the perfect holiday gift for someone you love--but with whom you may differ significantly about politics or religion--is my ground-breaking, critically-acclaimed novel about how we divide and hurt our fellow humans via dogmatic beliefs. It is safe and will not be insulting to to adherents of any worldview, yet will teach much about epistemology, the evolution of religion, skepticism, and why it all matters. A Secret of the Universe is at http://www.asecretoftheuniverse.com, where you can get a signed copy or subscribe to the premium, chapter-by-chapter audiobook podcast of the story, which is also available at iTunes.
Will Irace--of Differhonestly.com

Will Irace has created a forum for theists and non-theists to come together in an intellectually honest and civil fashion. Find out how it is going as Will and Steve discuss the issues and origins of the idea. Differhonestly.com was born after Will was asked to leave a Christian forum, where he was allegedly welcomed, then un-welcomed (which was certainly the right of the forum admin to do).
A community in search of knowledge - Jeff Seaver, president of the Center for Inquiry-Michigan, founder of the predecessor organization, the Freethought Association of West Michigan.

Jeff Seaver joins Steve to discuss the building of a social community around inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge. Jeff shares his motivations for founding the organization, and how it has grown. Then, join Tim Bennett and Steve as they stumble further down the road, asking if pure rationality should ever be the goal. When they determine it should not, and that emotion and delusion are actually desirable parts of the human experience, they debate where the line should be drawn. But who gets to choose? Who are WE to draw it?? We welcome your support of TDT via Steve's seminal novel about belief. Dr. Wilson says there is empirical evidence that religion has played useful roles in the evolution of humans, and that we are not being scientific when we leap to imply it is the root of all evil or a useless byproduct of other adaptations.
The Peltzman Effect - Dr. Sam Peltzman

Economist Dr. Sam Peltzman discusses his ground-breaking work that 30 years ago showed that people sometimes react to safety improvements with riskier behavior, offsetting some of the original benefit of the initiative. Having identified the effect, Peltzman and other economists remain cognizant to look for, and try to measure, unanticipated consequences of safety regulation. Dr. Peltzman is a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Also, Steve discusses a new Gallop poll showing partisan divisions over evolution.
Atheist's call for inclusion at the inter-faith table

In a departure from the tradition of anti-faith atheism, Steve runs a new approach up the flag pole to see if you'll salute. As if speaking to an upcoming Christian-church audience, he outlines a very rough outline of "An Atheist's Call for Inclusion at the Inter-faith Table." If supernaturalism and literalist intolerance could be put aside, isn't there a great deal of good in religious traditions and the infrastructure of support, community, and personal improvement they provide? What would the world be like if faith systems could embrace the original, mythically inspired messages of moving beyond one's self to find acceptance, tolerance, and love, without the flawed, dogmatic misunderstandings of ancient texts (sounds like the Jesus myth message, doesn't it)? Or what if they could at least agree to disagree as so many great leaders have done (think Ghandi)?
Just how much of current "orthodox" medicine is based upon solid research? The answer may surprise you. Dr. Jerry Hoffman joins us to discuss how many conventional medical practices and standards of care are NOT evidence-based, why that is, and also the limitations that the real world imposes upon the ideal of evidence-driven action. Dr. Hoffman (UCLA Medical Center and publisher of "Emergency Medical Abstracts") provides valuable insights from his years of abstracting medical journals for other physicians, insights that transcend medicine and apply to many aspects of the real world.
Jesus was never physically on earth; but, "To take the Gospels literally as history or biography is to utterly miss their inner spiritual meaning," says Tom Harpur in his book "The Pagan Christ". This Rhodes Scholar, former Anglican Priest, Professor of New Testament Theology, author of 8 best-selling books, and long-time religion editor for the Toronto Star has poked a hornets nest with his conclusions about the mythical origins of the Christ figure.
