 Shaq is Obese?

Shaquille O'Neal is Obese? Yah, right.   3/11/05

What if an AP Article came out in March of 2005, saying that over 50% of NBA basketball players are "overweight" by government standards (Body Mass Index)? What if four of them, including Shaquille O'Neal, were declared "Obese"? Do you have any clue what kind of body condition these players maintain?

What if conventional wisdom that being thin is better than being overweight was completely wrong? What if being thin was actually correlated with disease and early death to a much greater degree than being overweight - or even being mildly "obese".

What if there were different body shapes in nature, much as there are different hair colors and skin colors? What if we faced an epidemic of overeating and inactivity, but became mistaken and misguided, allowing cultural norms and prejudice to make us think it was a war on body shape and size rather than fitness and diet. What if evidence actually showed that limiting calories (dieting) tended to fail as a long-term weight loss plan, ultimately causing INCREASED weight gain? Worse yet, what if the "yo-yo" cycles actually appeared to cause significant harm to bodies and organs? What if conventional wisdom got such an important issue so very wrong?

Well as usual, guess what? At least according to one well-researched and widely acclaimed author, conventional wisdom could again be based more on emotion and unfounded beliefs, than on science.

I strongly urge you to consider our current discussion group topic, centered on the book The Obesity Myth: Why America's Obsession with Weight is Hazardous to your Health, by Paul Campos (Gotham, 2004). ...read more at our book discussion page... and join the discussion (after you read the book :-).
