"Building a social learning community that encourages skeptical examination of—and intellectually honest dialogue surrounding—virtually all claims about how the world works, and how it ought to work, in conscious effort to make it a better place for sentient beings."
For many people in today’s world, it can be difficult to find authentic, open-minded, and intelligent people with whom I can have safe, substantive, stimulating, and open conversations—where emotion is mastered such that all honest thoughts and inquiries are fair game. Welcome to Truth-Driven Thinking! Please consider this a personal invitation to join in a journey of discovery, thought, introspection, learning, dialogue, and sharing. We hope you'll look around the website, help us learn and grow, and perhaps become part of the events we're hoping to host in 2012; because you have thoughts and opinions about how the world works, and even how things ought to work. You may even claim to have solid proof about a god, an economic philosophy, a moral absolute, how to be "healthier," or what a family unit ought to look like. Most people do! And of course you may be right! (Hear back episodes and learn about the TDT Podcast here) Funny thing is, someone else claims to have proof that you're entirely wrong. So how can we proceed as a species? Who is right? Is the truth knowable? Is it even worth our effort? How can we get along or coexist? Welcome to our journey. We may not have all the answers, or even very many of them, but by engaging in an intellectually honest process, we think everyone will be better off. We hope you'll continue to read this |

Drowning in News & DataWe are exposed to "scientific studies," news reports, medical research, and massive amounts of data on a daily basis, yet truth seems ever more elusive. Ours is a cautiously skeptical learning community and peer-learning resource dedicated to seeking truth. We're willing to follow the evidence wherever it may lead us. See more videos below:

What is Truth-Driven Thinking? |

The term "Truth-Driven Thinking" is essentially used four ways: 1) A term akin to "critical thinking" or "skepticism" (see glossary); TDT it is a way of asking questions--a mode of inquiry that emphasizes science, reason, and evidence-based thinking, as opposed to emotion-driven thinking ... but it is much more than that: 2) It is a grass-roots attempt to create a social and learning community--one that seeks to guard against biases, prejudices, blindspots, and errors of reasoning, while simultaneously encouraging intellectually honest discussion, discourse that is constructive and tolerant of dissent while being kind in tone; it is also an attempt to create a community that is open to following evidence wherever it may lead (on any question or topic of inquiry--no matter how politically incorrect). 3) TDT is also the name of a specific information & learning resource, which is humbly designed for everyday people--who may or may not still seek formal education but remain passionately curious and enthusiastic about learning and remaining open to following evidence wherever it may lead. TDT is born of Stephen L. Gibson's real-life journey away from dogma and beliefs unsupported by evidence--which he has shared quite publicly via his podcast (here at iTunes) and his well-reviewed novel A Secret of the Universe (Amazon link); he considers himself ignorant but learning--and thus the perfect person to sacrifice his ego and pride that others might join in and help him learn, and perhaps also that they themselves may experience the liberation of setting aside ego and dispensing with the need to be right. 4) Perhaps most importantly, TDT is an alternative way to view and celebrate the real world in which we live, beyond simple or divisive religious dogma, beyond self-help, and beyond the empty promises of pseudoscientific and new-age babble. There is great beauty and peace that can be experienced by embracing reality, and even by embracing the the fullness of our humanity: pain, anguish, joy, wonder, awe, fragility, and love. |
