 Barry Glassner

Barry Glassner is a professor of sociology at the University of Southern California.  In 2000, he published his book The Culture of Fear upon which several of the principles of Michael Moore’s movie Bowling for Columbine were drawn. This sociologist had studied and documented meticulously that as a society, our perceptions are very often contrary or completely out of proportion to facts and the truth, from fears of air travel and razor blades in Halloween candy, to killer germs, child abductions, road rage, and crime.

Much of Glassner’s research brings to light the issue of fear in society. Who is afraid? What are they afraid of and who is using fear-mongering tactics to develop a personal agenda?

The Culture of Fear appeared on "Best Books of the Year" lists at the Los Angeles Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. He is currently at work on The Gospel of Food, a book on contemporary food beliefs and practices in the United States. This project continues his long-standing engagement with the sociological study of American culture, the U.S. media, and social construction Glassner also authored, Qualitative Sociology as Everyday Life (1999 with Rosanna Hertz), and Career Crash (1994) among others. His articles have appeared in journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Problems, American Journal of Psychiatry, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. His honors include: University of Southern California Associates Award for Creativity in Research; Fellow, Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities; Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award (Honorable Mention). Barry Glassner received his PhD from Washington University in 1977.
